About the show
About Conversations with Ami
I'm Ami Morgenstern, and I've always had a knack for business.
Not the textbook kind — the kind that shows up as a compulsion to understand how things work, why some businesses grow and others stall, and what separates the entrepreneur who's struggling through it alone from the one who's actually building something that lasts.
I didn't start out building companies — I started out learning them from the inside. I spent my early career in office and account management, then moved into bookkeeping and eventually Financial Controller roles, which meant sitting inside other people's businesses and watching, up close, exactly where the numbers and the operations either held together or didn't. That vantage point is where the itch to build my own thing came from.
In July 2022, that itch turned into Better Ledgers Inc. — bookkeeping and back-office support built on everything I'd learned from the inside. In January 2024, I co-founded Dash Staff to solve a problem we kept running into ourselves — we couldn't find great bookkeepers through the offshore staffing agencies we tried, so we figured we'd have to do it ourselves. Today, I build and run companies that give entrepreneurs the infrastructure they need to hit their goals, instead of duct-taping it together themselves.
Conversations with Ami grew out of the same instinct. I kept having these conversations — with clients, with other founders, with people I met at random — where someone would explain a piece of their world (how a bank actually decides what to lend you, why a tax strategy that works for one business is a trap for another, how to price your first jobs so you don't torch your reputation) and I'd think: everyone starting out needs to hear this, and almost nobody does until it's too late.
So the show is built around one job: giving early-stage entrepreneurs the things worth knowing before you need them — not after you've already made the expensive mistake.
Everyone starting out needs to hear this — and almost nobody does until it's too late.
What you'll actually get from an episode
Every conversation is built to do one (or more) of five things:
- A peer story — proof you're not crazy for finding this hard, from someone who's actually in it.
- Nuanced literacy — understanding a service or system before you're in a position to misuse it or get burned by it.
- Future planning — not what to do today, but how to think about a decision once you actually reach that stage.
- What not to do — the specific, expensive mistakes people make, straight from people who watch others make them.
- Core skills — beginner-level competency in the stuff every entrepreneur eventually has to do themselves: sell, manage, hire, read your own numbers.
The one rule that sits underneath all of it: I'm not interested in guests who wave things away. "Just delegate it" or "$50K is nothing" doesn't help anyone who doesn't have $50K sitting around. Every guest is here to make something usable, not to remind you how far you have to go.
Why I talk about myself too
This show isn't just guest interviews with me nodding along — you'll get some of my own story too, on purpose. Not because it's interesting to me, but because if it doesn't teach you something, it doesn't belong here.
The clearest example: I've dealt with an eating disorder, and recovering from it taught me something I now use in business constantly — that real change comes from small, boring, repeatable steps, not from a single heroic leap. That's not a metaphor I picked because it sounds nice. It's the same principle I bring up when we talk about pricing your first jobs, building a sales process, or scaling a team: take the smaller win you can actually execute, let it compound, and trust that the distance adds up. If something in my life doesn't cash out into something you can use, I try to leave it out.
I'm also just genuinely into practical mental health — not as a wellness trend, but the same way I'm into business: what actually works, tested against reality, no fluff.
The businesses behind the show
Building companies is what led me to start this podcast, and it's still what I do outside of it:
- Better Ledgers — bookkeeping and back-office support for growing businesses that need their financial foundation handled right, so they can actually see what's happening in their numbers instead of guessing.
- Dash Staff — offshore staffing that lets entrepreneurs build a real team by tapping into a global talent pool — more people to choose from, and skilled talent at a fraction of the cost of hiring locally.
If something in an episode makes you think "I need this handled for my business" — that's exactly the gap these two companies exist to fill.
